# Aliases

> Make your own short names for commands.

## Overview

An alias is a short name that runs a longer command, for example `!tb` that runs `!tempban` with some arguments already filled in. Aliases belong to the server and work with the message prefix. The command they run is checked as if the person had typed it, so an alias never gives anyone more permissions.

It needs **Manage Server**.

## Commands

<CodeGroup>
  ```javascript Syntax theme={null}
  !alias add <name> <command>
  !alias remove <name>
  !alias view <name>
  !alias list
  ```

  ```javascript Example theme={null}
  !alias add rules embed send rules_embed
  !alias add tb tempban {0} 1d {1}
  !alias list
  ```

  ```text Result theme={null}
  Alias `rules` now runs `embed send rules_embed`. Use placeholders such as `{0}` for arguments.
  ```
</CodeGroup>

* `name` has letters, numbers, `_` and `-` only, up to 32 characters, and is typed without the prefix.
* `command` is the command to run with its arguments. Use `{0}`, `{1}` and so on where the words you type after the alias go.
* A name that is already a built-in command or shortcut is refused. An alias cannot run `alias`.
* An argument that was not typed is left out, so `{1}` with only one word typed is simply empty.
* Running `add` with the same name replaces the alias.

`!alias` also works as `!aliases`.

<Info>
  For a shortcut that answers with a message or a whole flow, use a [custom command](/automation/custom-commands) instead.
