# Ask (AI)

> Ask Petto a question and an AI answers in the chat: how to ask, the daily limit (10 for free members, unlimited with Premium), how to keep a conversation going, what it will not answer, privacy and how a server turns it off.

BETA

## Overview

**Ask** is an AI that answers questions inside Discord, in a short and casual text. It is a **BETA**: it can be wrong, it can change, and it can be unavailable for a while. Do not trust it for anything important.

* It answers as a reply to your message and **never pings anybody**.
* Every answer ends with a small line that says it is an AI and can be wrong, and (for free members) how many questions you have left today.
* It answers in the language you wrote the question in.

## How to ask

```javascript Syntax theme={null}
!ask <question>
petto ask <question>
@Petto ask <question>
/ai ask question:<question>
```

```javascript Example theme={null}
!ask how do I make a good study schedule?
petto ask what is the capital of Australia?
/ai ask question:explain what a prime number is
```

* `!ask` works with every prefix of your server, so if your server uses `?`, write `?ask`. `petto ask` and `@Petto ask` always work.
* `/ai ask` answers in public in the channel (it shows that it is thinking first). The question can have up to 800 characters.
* `!ai ask <question>` is the same thing with the prefix.

## Limits

| Who | Questions |
| - | - |
| Free members | **10 a day**. The day is a UTC day, and `/ai usage` tells you when it comes back |
| Members with [Premium](https://wiki.petto.sbs/overview/premium.md) | **Unlimited** |

There is also a short wait between two questions, and caps that protect the quota that everybody shares. If Petto is busy it tells you to try again later and that question does not count.

A question that gets no answer is not counted either.

## See how many you have left

```javascript Example theme={null}
/ai usage
!ai usage
!askusage
```

It tells you how many questions you have left today and when they come back (or that you have no limit). With `/ai usage` only you see the answer.

## Keep the conversation going

**Reply to one of Petto's answers** and write your next question, with no command word. Petto reads the last messages of that chain as context, so you can say "and in Spanish?" or "give me an example".

Only the member who asked the first question can continue the conversation, and every question in it counts as one of the day.

## What it will not answer

Petto refuses, briefly and kindly, hateful or harassing content, sexual content, anything that promotes self-harm, and instructions to hurt people or to do anything illegal. For medical, legal or financial questions it only gives general information and suggests asking a professional.

## Privacy

* The **text of your question** is sent to the AI provider, **Groq**, to produce the answer. When you reply to a previous answer, the **earlier messages of that chain** are sent too, as context.
* Petto **does not store your questions or the answers**.
* The only thing it keeps is **how many questions each member asked each day**, to apply the daily limit.

Do not write passwords, tokens or personal data in a question.

## For server admins

Ask is on in every server. You can turn it off or limit it with the commands you already use for any other command:

```javascript Syntax theme={null}
!disablecommand ask
!restrictcommand add ask <role>
```

```javascript Example theme={null}
!disablecommand ask
!restrictcommand add ask @Members
```

* [`!disablecommand ask`](https://wiki.petto.sbs/automation/disable-commands) turns it off in the whole server, or in some channels. It covers `/ai ask`, `!ask` and the follow-up replies. `!disablecommand ai` turns off `ask` and `usage` together.
* [`!restrictcommand ask`](https://wiki.petto.sbs/setup/permissions#role-restrictions) lets only some roles use it.
* For the slash command, you can also choose who sees `/ai` in **Server Settings → Integrations → Petto**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A server that already has an alias or a custom command called `ask` keeps its own.
